Halishahar is the flat coastal strip on the southern side of Chittagong, between Agrabad and the sea. It is one of the more orderly parts of the city to buy land in: the Halishahar Housing Estate laid out much of it on a grid, and the roads and plot boundaries follow that layout rather than the improvised pattern of the older neighbourhoods.
Its position is worth understanding before its price is. Agrabad, the commercial district, is a short distance north; Port Connecting Road runs along the area's inland edge and carries traffic to the port; the Chittagong Export Processing Zone and the port itself are the two employers most residents work near. Demand here follows the port cycle more closely than it follows Dhaka.
The thing to check that is specific to this ground is water. Halishahar is low-lying and close to the coast, so drainage, tidal backflow and monsoon waterlogging vary street by street and are not visible in the dry season. Ask neighbours who have been through a wet season, and look at the plot and its access road in the rain.
